Extinct animals have always fascinated mankind. They are so similar to current fauna, yet so different. The fact that they are extinct makes us to perceive them as fantasy creatures. Wooly mammoths right now are as real as unicorns. However, scientists are as curious and intrigued about these extinct beasts as we are, so they have come up with a good theoretical bases on how to resurrect them. These ice age behemoths can be the first extinct species that are brought back to life through cloning.

Mammoths are good candidates for revival because they went extinct fairly recently and because there are several intact specimens found frozen in the Arctic tundra. These wooly creatures are also closely related to animals that are alive now – elephants, so if it is possible to collect a good genome sample from the mammoth and artificially inseminate an elephant, the wooly mammoth can be resurrected. This instagram shows the exact steps how that could be possible.

With hard work and some luck this project can be possible. However, it raises a lot of questions. How similar really will be the new animal to the ancient wooly mammoth? Is this process ethical? Isn’t this process similar to dog breeding where  only the chosen, good looking specimens are allowed to breed? If this project is successful, only time can tell.
